What is Hypnotherapy?

Think for a moment of something about yourself that you would like to change. Focus on what would help to transform your life, to help you lead the life you want. This could take the form of something you would like to eliminate from your life, or something you would like to add to your life, and these things may be physical or emotional. Now think about the blocks you have which prevent you from making that change. Be aware that this thinking is done in your conscious mind which does not have access to the deeper levels of your mind where unwanted behaviour patterns have been laid down, often from a very early age.

I can help you to access those deep levels of your mind, empowering you to change old unwanted behaviour patterns and create new, positive habits which are more beneficial to your life today.

There are several levels of hypnosis but for most conditions only a very light trance state is required which is easily achieved by 95% of the population. The remaining 5% may need more practise, a change of environment , a different day or even a different hypnotist. Should you fall into this 5% do not be put off, you may simply get off to a slower start but will reap the same rewards for your persistence.

When you are in trance (hypnosis) your subconscious mind is protecting you, monitoring the environment, and will instantly jerk you into full wakefulness if there is any hint of danger to you.

This includes anything which your therapist may say to you which is completely unacceptable to your basic principles and ethics. So you can relax completely and enjoy the experience , knowing that no harm can come to you.

What should I expect from my first Hypnotherapy session?

At the first session the hypnotherapist will take a detailed case history from you and will make sure that you understand what hypnosis is and what feelings you may expect to experience.

You will work together as a therapeutic partnership to establish what are the aims of the therapy and what you are trying to achieve.

You will be asked to sit or lie down and the therapist will ensure that you are warm and comfortable before beginning to gently guide you into trance. There are many ways of doing this but a common way is to talk to you gently and quietly making suggestions that you are feeling very relaxed, that your eyelids are very heavy, that your whole body is feeling heavy and relaxed . You may be asked to focus on something such as an imaginary dot on the ceiling while you count backwards. You may be asked to visualise a beautiful secret place, your own private sanctuary .

Whichever method or combination of methods is used the feelings you will have are the same. You will feel as if you are drifting off to sleep and you will feel calm, relaxed and peaceful but aware of everything that is going on. You may not feel as if you are in trance. Many people report this, but it does not matter, there is no "right" way to feel. You can just let go and enjoy the pleasant feeling of complete mental and physical relaxation.

Your hypnotherapist has a tool box of various therapeutic techniques and will decide which "tool" to use according to the nature of the presenting condition, the patient’s disposition and the progress which is being made. Usually the only tool used at the first session is direct suggestion where the hypnotherapist will "suggest" ways in which your subconscious mind can guide you to recognise your own abilities and resources.

In subsequent sessions some of the techniques employed may be visualisation, regression, Gestalt, Parts therapy and many others. Your hypnotherapist will always explain what these techniques are and make sure you fully understand before putting you into trance.

At the end of the session you will be "woken up" and within a few moments you will feel bright, alert and wonderfully refreshed. You will be perfectly able to drive a car, go back to work or do anything else you want to do and for the rest of the day you may wonder why you feel so good!
